Rough Start

I've been eagerly waiting for the 2010 baseball season to start since about the end of the 2009 season. And finally it's here. I know the Jays are likely to have a tough year, and are being picked to finish last in the AL East. But I'm still excited to watch this team. The big signing of Adam Lind on Saturday shows that management is looking to build, and I think they're starting the process well.

Today's opener in Texas didn't go so well, though there were some positives.

Marcum looked real good in his first start since '08. He had the strikeout working, and carried a no hitter into the 7th. And the home run he gave up to Cruz was a good pitch. Cruz just went down and got it, and you can't blame the Toronto pitcher for that.

Lind got off to a great start for the season, with three hits including a home run. But even better news is that Wells has come out of the gate running. Three RBIs and a home run on the day for him. Hopefully he'll prove the critics wrong this year.

The weakness today, though, came from an unusual source. The two guys who battled for the closer spot this spring (Downs and Frasor) were the ones who let us down late. Maybe we can chalk it up to one bad outing, or maybe even blame it in part on the stadium. But what worries me is how Frasor looked out there once Young got the double to start the ninth. He looked completely out of sorts, not the composed individual I've expected him to be. I've supported Frasor as the closer since Ryan was released last year, so I'm hoping he can bounce back.
